What is sport stacking?

Sport stacking involves upstacking and downstacking a set of 12 specially designed cups into pyramids in various patterns at crazy fast speeds.

Why do I need specially designed cups for sport stacking?

Crazy-Cups are made of lightweight plastic, have 4 holes for airflow (fast downstacking and "unsticky" upstacking), nest together at the correct distance for fingers to grasp, have ridges for the fingers to grasp, and have a smooth inside and textured outside. All of this provides consistency, which makes sport stacking with Crazy-Cups fast and fun.

Why is it called sport stacking?

To be truly correct, the sport was initially called cup stacking. The name was changed to 'sport stacking', declared in 2005 by one of the governing bodies, the WSSA, an organization created by a sport stacking company. This name change was created partly to distance the name of the sport from another company and to better represent cup stacking as a sport, not a game. Whatever you call it, there is fun to be had and a great deal of educational benefits can be enjoyed by stackers of all ages.

What are the educational benefits of Crazy-Cups?

This is why we promote sport stacking. Many educators have noted positive changes in a variety of areas including hand-eye coordination, ambidexterity, reaction time, understanding patterns and sequences, learning from mistakes, and practice makes you better. This is truly a sport where those who practice not only get faster, but they can see the results of their efforts in a relatively short time. This is especially cool for the typically ungifted athlete. It doesn't matter if you're big or small, tall or short, young or old, skinny or buff, shy or outgoing, sport stacking has evened out the competition because it is primarily a practice-based sport. There have been several occasions where the 'geek' has blown away the 'athletically gifted', like David over Goliath.

Also, a small study of elementary students in 2004 found "significant improvements for both hand-eye coordination and reaction time." Many stackers have noticed faster reflexes when trying to catch something that falls off a table or desk. Some have noticed they can use their opposite hand with more efficiency. If that's not enough, Crazy-Cups are simply fun! For a complete list of benefits click HERE.

Is this a joke? Is sport stacking for real?

No, it's not a joke and yes, it's for real. Around 30,000 schools have implemented sport stacking. There are local, citywide, regional, and world tournaments that go on where kids and adults see how they stack up against others. This is not a fad that will die out. Sport stacking has been popular in certain areas for over 20 years and has finally made its way into mainstream culture within the past few years.

Are there championships in sport stacking?

Yes, there are championships held every year, where stackers compete for a variety of awards. Championships were initially held in Oceanside, CA (CupStack Championships - for roughly 10 years). The WSSA championships are held in Denver, CO, and the ISSF championships are held in Germany. Records are coninually beaten in sport stacking, though there was a long period when famous stacker Emily Fox held on to the world record cycle stack (7.43 seconds), only recently being passed up in 6 separate divisions, with many more stackers now under her 7.43 time. This shows how rapidly the sport has changed. The 2008 world record was 6.21, by Steven Purugganan of Massachusetts. That's an amazing 1.22 seconds faster than Emily Fox's amazing 7.43 seconds!

What are the WSSA and the ISSF?

The WSSA (World Sport Stacking Association) was created in 2001 as the nonprofit side of Speed Stacks Inc. WSSA employees are financially supported by Speed Stacks Inc. In 2006, the WSSA decided to ban all other cups in WSSA competitions, making Speed Stacks the only allowed cups in their tournaments. In addition, no logos from other brands are allowed at WSSA tournaments on anything (shirts, backpacks, hats, etc.).

The ISSF (International Sport Stacking Federation) was created in 2006 as the nonprofit side of Flashcups. Their philosophy encourages innovation in the sport, allowing any brand of cups in their competitions. They have more age divisions than the WSSA (23 versus 16).

Both organizations seek to maintain fairness and both organizations offer championships.

How did sport stacking get started? The History of Cup Stacking. The History of Sport Stacking.

Sport stacking has been credited to Wayne Godinet of Oceanside, CA around 1980. At the time, he was program director at a Boys & Girls Club where he used fast-food cups to keep his crew of youth occupied. He did more than just that; he created an awesome sport that has drawn hundreds of thousands of stackers into an educational tool that is fun. Wayne developed the main three stacks that are still used today: the 3-3-3, 3-6-3, and the cycle stack. Now that's cool.
